First in a series of quick painting tips, I'll be sharing some of my favorite paints & mediums for acrylic painting. (Disclaimer: Links in the article are affiliate links. If you make a purchase through the link, you will not pay anything extra, but I do get a small commission. Thank you!)
There is no one perfect color for shading, but if I had to pick a favorite for painting cool, dark shadows it would be Liquitex Payne's Grey .
This color is a perfect, dark, cool grey that is really useful for adding shading to your painting:
- It can be thinned with water to use a wash over an area you need to darken.
- It also works well mixed into a glazing medium for darkening colors.
- I also like to add it to paint mixes to darken a color instead of using black or a complimentary color.
Liquitex Payne's Grey is my go-to color for shading skulls:

Used thinned with water, it is perfect for adding the darkest shadow areas to a portrait.

Payne's Grey is itself a mixture, it is not a solitary pigment. So there will be differences in the color between paint brands. Liquitex is my favorite by far. Not too blue, not too black, it is just right!
